Mindfulness Meditation as a Depression Remedy

To some it sounds weird, like some false advertisement for a bad product. For others it’s an “I told you thing”, but for doctors in psychiatry a new study has changed how they view their jobs. A new study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry finds that depression patients in remission who underwent mindfulness therapy did as well as those who took an antidepressant, and better than those who took a placebo. So the results are in, depression responds to mindfulness meditation positively. That means that those that are looking for an alternative to the pharmaceutical drugs for depression can look towards more than just St. Johns Wort and the other herbal remedies. Although those herbs work fine, it’s good to have a variety of ways to effectively treat depression. A recent study found that St. Johns Wort is effective against even major depression and now we are seeing another Buddhist tradition. Mindfulness meditation is a Buddhist tradition that teaches the practitioner to be in the present here and now. (MORE)
