Ever had so much "noise" in your head — thoughts rattling around that you can't seem to stop — that it's hard to concentrate and stay on task? Meditation might be for you, says practitioner and instructor Juliette de Campos of Visalia.
"By practicing meditation you can observe what your mind is doing," she said.
Over time, you gradually develop a greater capacity to slow that process down and, therefore, improve your ability to concentrate, she said.
She also said that meditation, practiced over time, actually changes that part of the brain that is responsible for regulating positive emotions.
"Once you learn what your mind is doing, you don't have to react in the same way to what triggers stress and you'll have a greater sense of well being," she said.
De Campos said she suffered from anxiety as a child and began practicing yoga and meditation in 2001. She started studying spiritual psychology at the University of Santa Monica and will receive her master's degree next year.
She's convinced it has helped her excel in her own life and wants to share that with others. (More)
