When you are starting out with meditation, the most difficult part for most, is trying to "clear your mind". Our minds are never really totally clear, we always have thoughts racing about.
One simple meditation exercise that I found useful to clear my mind, is to focus on my breath. This helps me to come back when my attention has wandered.
Five-Minute Breathing Exercise
Observe yourself as you breathe.
Don't try to breathe any deeper or slower, just observe your natural breathing cycles.
You may notice that your breathing slows down and deepens all by itself without any effort on your part.
If your mind is really scattered, you may find youself starting to think about other things, like the appointment you have tomorrow, the kids, the sounds in the room, cars zooming past, airplanes overhead, ect. that's ok this is normal. You may even momentarily forget that you are doing this exercise. When this happens, simply go back to the breath and repeat the exercise again.
If you find this exercise easy, you may wish to prolong the technique for ten or fifteen minutes.
